Designing healthier lives, from day one.
—
A home is more than a place to live.
It is health infrastructure.
Thoughtful design today creates a longer, healthier tomorrow.
7 Elements of Home Design for a Better Long-Term Quality of Life
A good home isn’t measured solely by its aesthetics, but also by its ability to support the daily lives of its inhabitants.
The Longevity Design concept therefore takes interior design beyond simply choosing styles, furniture, or materials. It prioritizes the environment in which we live daily, encompassing light, air, sound, natural materials, relaxation, and even creating spaces that promote healthy behaviors.
At 3BS, we believe these elements can be incorporated into home design from the outset, ensuring that a house is not just “beautiful when finished,” but also a comfortable living space that meets long-term needs.
1. Light — The light that respects the body’s biological clock.
Light affects the atmosphere inside a home and is also related to the body’s wake-and-rest cycle, or circadian rhythm.
Therefore, the design should take into account the location of openings, the direction of natural light, and the usage patterns of each area. For example, areas used in the morning should receive appropriate natural light, while living rooms or bedrooms in the evening can use warm-toned light to create a relaxing atmosphere . In addition, a Tunable White Lighting system that can adjust the color temperature of the light according to the time of day is another option for designing lighting that aligns with the routines of the occupants.
2. Air — The air that allows the house to breathe.
Indoor air quality is invisible, but it’s crucial for our daily living.
Designing a house layout that incorporates cross ventilation, humidity control, and air filtration and exchange systems are all crucial considerations from the design phase . This is especially important for urban homes facing dust and PM2.5 pollution. A well-designed air conditioning system can help bring in fresh air without needing to constantly open windows. At the same time, the various systems should be designed to blend seamlessly with the interior design, without compromising the aesthetic appeal of the space.
3. Acoustics — The silence that allows us to rest.
Sound is another often overlooked element in interior design, yet it directly impacts the sense of calm and privacy within a home . Bedrooms, offices, or relaxation areas can be designed to reduce noise by using sound-absorbing materials, insulation between rooms, appropriately designed ceilings and walls, and double-glazing in areas that need to cope with external noise.
The goal isn’t necessarily to make the house “completely silent,” but rather to create a level of noise that’s suitable for various activities, allowing relaxation areas to fully function.
4. Materials — Materials that consider the health of the occupants.
The beauty of a material is immediately visible, but what should be considered alongside it is what it releases into the home environment.
The Longevity Design concept therefore emphasizes selecting materials with low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as well as considering the paints, adhesives, coatings, and surface finishes used in the home . Natural materials such as wood and stone, or materials that meet indoor air quality standards, can be chosen considering aesthetics, durability, maintenance, and their impact on the indoor environment.
5. Nature — Connecting habitats back to nature.
Biophilic Design is a concept that incorporates the relationship between humans and nature into the design process.
And it doesn’t necessarily mean bringing a lot of plants into the house.
Opening up to views of the garden, utilizing natural light, choosing wood or stone, employing natural-feeling surfaces, and strategically placing green spaces visible from living areas all help create a sense of connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Homes can therefore provide a sense of peace and relaxation, where nature becomes an integral part of the daily life experience.
6. Recovery — An area designed for recovery.
A bedroom shouldn’t just be a room with a bed, but a space conducive to true rest.
From controlling light, sound, temperature, and air conditioning placement to selecting mattresses and furniture, and minimizing light disturbances from electronic devices, every element can be considered together from the design phase.
Some homes may include a reading nook, meditation area, or private relaxation space to create moments where the body and mind can truly rest from external stimuli.
7. Active Living — A home where self-care becomes a natural part of life.
The design of spaces can shape our behavior more than we realize.
Instead of waiting for residents to “make an effort” to maintain their health, homes can be designed to make those behaviors easier to achieve. This could include routing pathways that encourage movement, having easily accessible yoga or exercise spaces, a user-friendly kitchen for cooking, or common areas that provide opportunities for family members to spend more time together.
This is the concept of Passive Wellness — creating an environment that supports good behaviors without making you feel forced to live against your lifestyle.
Longevity Design — When home design isn't just about today.
The heart of Longevity Design is not in any single technology or in maximizing health-related functions, but in viewing the home as a “system of living” where various components should work together.
Light • Air • Acoustics • Materials • Nature • Recovery • Active Living
From planning and building houses to systems installation and interior design, if every aspect is considered from the beginning, it helps reduce later modifications and ensures that the design comprehensively addresses aesthetics, functionality, and quality of life.
For 3BS, a turnkey approach doesn’t just mean overseeing the project from design to construction and completion; it also involves integrating design, systems, materials, and living details to ensure a unified vision for the entire project.
Because a good home shouldn’t just be a beautiful house today.
But it should be an area that can still support our lives well in the future.
